Vezzano
Ligure is a quiet 7,300-inhabitant
centre located near La Spezia at the end
of the Levante Ligure and close to the
border with Tuscany. An easy reach by
car and train, the city (270 mts. a.s.l.)
is set in an area where sea and
entroterra meet, jealously preserving
ancient rural traditions, histories and
wisdoms.
This settlement of Roman origins (presiding
the Magra and Vara rivers from the hills)
passed through time under several
dominations – Genoese, Napoleonic, Savoy
-, the destiny of numberless Ligurian
localities. The centre is c omposed
of hamlets, namely
Vezzano
Bassa and Vezzano Alta: the first features the
remains of ancient walls, which once
surrounded the whole perimeter, and a
tranquil centro storico; the second
boasts a panoramic esplanade with
polychrome cobbles in front of the
Santuario del Soccorso.
Many are the meanings of a holiday in
Vezzano
Ligure: the priceless relaxation of
green landscapes, in close contact with
nature, people and folklore. Or the
multitude of excursions (on foot, by
MTB, by car) towards the Cinque Terre,
the Golfo dei Poeti, the Apuan Alps,
Versilia…Sea and mountain, culture and
rites, crafts and customs play a melody
harm oniously
showing in architecture, popular poetry,
proverbs and recipes. The cuisine du
terroir, too, dates far back in time, to
the era of heroic cultivation and hard
work. Its trademarks, in fact, come from
orchard and field: grapes (feasted on
the last Sunday in September), garlic,
olives, herbs for soups and fillings,
fritters, ravioli (with the touch of
scenting “persa”), pork and beans,
Winter polenta… the hearty flavours of
rural culinary art, a masterpiece of
simplicity and creativity. |
